Wexton’s seat draws numerous candidates

By Audrey Carpenter

U.S. Representative Jennifer Wexton’s seat (D-10) has drawn 14 candidates who want to fill her shoes when she retires. Her current term ends on Jan. 3, 2025.

Wexton has held the seat since 2019 and represents all of Rappahannock County, Fauquier County, and Loudoun County, parts of Fairfax County and Prince William County, as well as the independent cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. Loudoun County residents make up more than half of 10th Congressional District.

In September, Wexton announced she would not seek another term due to a diagnosis of Progressive supranuclear palsy, a form of atypical Parkinsons. Progressive supranuclear palsy is a rare neurological disorder that affects body movements, walking and balance, and eye movements, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The following 11 Democratic candidates have officially announced they are running:

State Delegate Michelle Maldonado, D-Manassas
Former Virginia House speaker Eileen Filler-Corn
State Sen. Jennifer Boysko, D-Herndon
Del. David Reid, D-Ashburn
Del. Dan Helmer, D-Fairfax
State Senator-elect Suhas Subramanyam
Former Virginia Secretary of Education Atif Qarni
Mark Leighton, a George Mason University librarian
Krystle Kaul, a defense contractor
Brandon Garay, a Department of Defense official
Atif Qarni, former Secretary of Education

Three Republicans have also announced their run:

Mike Clancy, an attorney and technology company executive
Brooke Taylor, a defense company executive
Manga Anantatmula, who has worked for the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security

Hung Cao, a Purcellville resident and retired Navy captain who ran against Wexton in the 2022 election, is not seeking her seat. Cao, a Republican, is now running for Virginia Democrat Senator Tim Kaine’s seat in the 2024 election.
