Mayor Fraser joins President Biden for internet cost reduction announcement

President Biden announces high-speed internet cost reduction program.

On May 9, Purcellville Mayor Kwasi Fraser, who instituted local enabling legislation for the expansion of broadband internet for the Purcellville area, joined other municipal and business leaders at the White House for President Biden’s announcement on reducing the cost of high-speed internet for all Americans.

“I applaud President Biden and Vice President Harris for their commitment to lowering internet prices for citizens of Purcellville and millions of Americans via the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Affordable Connectivity Program,” Mayor Fraser observed. “I firmly believe that competition is the key catalyst for high-speed Internet affordability. As such, I am pleased with the administration’s encouragement of broadband service providers to extend their networks to more markets.”

Keeping internet service affordable in Purcellville, the economic hub of Western Loudoun, has been a challenge, Fraser explained. The only major service provider that comes close to providing broadband in excess of 100 MB upload and download—mostly on a best-effort basis—delivers its service via a combination of coaxial and fiber. “Many of our residents do not find that affordable,” noted Fraser, who has instituted a strategy for assessing the feasibility of laying fiber optics during all road and utility line construction projects.

Mayor Fraser has committed to socializing the availability of funds for eligible families in Purcellville to reduce their monthly high-speed Internet costs.
