Former Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax Dies in Apparent Murder-Suicide

Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax and his wife, Cerina Fairfax, died in an apparent murder-suicide, according to reports released Thursday.

Authorities have not yet released full details surrounding the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Fairfax served as Virginia’s lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022 and was once considered a rising figure in state politics. News of the couple’s deaths drew reactions from officials across the Commonwealth.

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger said she was “deeply saddened” by the tragedy and extended condolences to the family.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred last night. I am praying for the Fairfax children, and I ask my fellow Virginians to hold them in their hearts and prayers,” she said.

Spanberger also described the passing of Cerina Fairfax as a “horrific tragedy” and noted her professional and community involvement.

“Dr. Fairfax was a devoted mother, beloved dentist in the Fairfax County community, and engaged supporter of her alma mater, Virginia Commonwealth University. My prayers are with the Wanzer and Fairfax families as they mourn their own loss, endeavor to make sense of this tragedy, and comfort the Fairfax children.”

She added that the incident underscores the broader issue of domestic violence and the importance of available support resources.

“This tragedy reminds us that domestic violence can occur in any family and in any place. Resources are available to support our neighbors experiencing domestic violence and facing mental health crises.”

Virginia’s federal delegation also issued statements expressing shock and condolences.

U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine said, “We are keeping Cerina and Justin Fairfax’s family—especially their two children—in our prayers as we all process this shocking and horrifying news. We urge any Virginians impacted by domestic violence to call the police or the National Domestic Violence Hotline for support.”

U.S. Rep. Suhas Subramanyam added, “Dr. Cerina Fairfax was a kind, wonderful woman who was beloved by those who knew her. Like everyone else, I am shocked by this horrible act of violence. My heart goes out to their children, their family, and loved ones during this extremely difficult time.”

Board of Supervisors Chair Phyllis J. Randall also issued a statement on behalf of Loudoun County, expressing condolences and urging reflection and support for those in crisis.

“I am heartbroken by the deaths of former Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax and his wife, Dr. Cerina W. Fairfax, in an apparent murder-suicide.

“On behalf of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors and the citizens of Loudoun County, I send my condolences to the children, family, and friends of Justin and Cerina Fairfax.

“While any death is a cause for grief, a murder/suicide is also a cause for reflection. If you or anyone you know is considering harming yourself or others, or if you are feeling hopeless, please reach out.”
