Local Towns urge water conservation
With the region facing moderate drought conditions and little rain in the forecast, both the Town of Purcellville and the Town of Middleburg have issued water conservation notices, encouraging residents and businesses to reduce non-essential water use.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, Loudoun County is currently experiencing moderate drought conditions. In response, both towns are asking the community to take voluntary steps to conserve water as officials monitor the situation.
On Sept. 23, the Town of Purcellville announced that a Drought Watch is now in effect. This is the first stage in the town’s three-level drought response plan, which includes Watch, Warning, and Emergency levels.
The Drought Watch is intended to raise awareness and encourage early conservation efforts. Town officials are asking residents to reduce outdoor watering, limit vehicle washing, and repair leaks on private property as soon as possible.
Purcellville officials stated they will continue to monitor local drought indicators and weather forecasts, and will issue further guidance if conditions worsen.
On Sept. 12, the Town of Middleburg implemented Voluntary Water Conservation measures for all users of its municipal water system. The decision was prompted by ongoing dry weather and operational concerns with one of the town’s main water sources.
Middleburg officials reported that Well 4, which had undergone rehabilitation in June, is now showing an unexpected and significant drop in water level during pumping. Measurements indicate that the water level falls to just 50 feet above the pump—its lowest level ever recorded.
As part of the voluntary measures, Middleburg encourages residents to:
- Use outdoor water only between the hours of 6 p.m. and 9 a.m.
- Limit use of irrigation systems and rely on handheld watering
- Minimize the use of ornamental water features unless using recycled water
- Adopt water-saving practices indoors, such as taking shorter showers and turning off faucets when not in use.
Town officials continue to monitor well levels and overall water supply. If conditions worsen or operational concerns persist, the town may implement mandatory water restrictions.
