LCSO partners with Loudoun County Public Schools

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has a new partnership with Loudoun County Public Schools to provide General Educational Development preparation classes for inmates at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. The program began on Feb. 24, and aims to help inmates earn their high school equivalency diploma.

LCPS educator and Dean of Non-Traditional Schools Christina Schmitt will lead the inaugural class, working with groups of up to six inmates at a time. The program takes a focused approach, with students mastering one content area before progressing to the next. The curriculum is module-based, providing instructional support for all four GED test subjects: science, mathematical reasoning, social science, and English language arts.

“Our partnership with Loudoun County Public Schools represents a commitment to providing meaningful educational opportunities to help inmates upon their release,” said Sheriff Mike Chapman. “By earning their GED, participants will be better positioned to secure employment and reintegrate into society in a positive way.”

The initiative came about after LCSO identified a need for structured GED preparation among the inmate population. LCPS Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence and Assistant Superintendent Tedra Richardson responded positively to the request when personally touring the facility last spring.

“This collaborative effort demonstrates our commitment to ensuring everyone in Loudoun County receives a world class education,” stated LCPS Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence. “Everyone deserves the opportunity to feel seen and heard while they are learning, and we are proud to partner with LCSO to expand those opportunities.”

The program will operate on an ongoing basis, with new participants joining as space becomes available. Inmates who do not have a high school diploma or equivalent are eligible to participate.
