Inova Loudoun Hospital designated as a Level II Trauma Center

Inova has officially designated the Inova Virts Miller Family Emergency and Trauma Center at Inova Loudoun Hospital as a provisional Level II Trauma Center, strengthening access to high-level emergency care for patients in Loudoun County and across the region. This is the only trauma center in Loudoun County, complementing the capabilities of Inova Fairfax Medical Campus’s nationally recognized Level I Trauma Center, and enhances the coordination and reach of Inova’s trauma network.

The announcement was made on Oct. 7 during a ceremony for the Inova Virts Miller Family Emergency and Trauma Center in Leesburg, where hospital leadership, local officials, medical staff, members of the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office, Sheriff Mike Chapman along with members of the Sheriff’s Office, and donors gathered to mark the milestone.

As a Level II Trauma Center, Inova Loudoun Hospital delivers immediate, expert trauma care 24/7—because in the emergency department, minutes, even seconds, can mean the difference between life and death. With trauma-trained surgeons, specialized nurses, critical care teams, and advanced equipment always on hand, patients in Northern Virginia can now receive the highest level of care closer to home, when it matters most.

“When someone in our community experiences a traumatic injury—whether it’s a car accident, a fall, or a life-threatening medical emergency—they deserve immediate, expert care, close to home. Today, we can say with full confidence: they have it, right here, in Loudoun,” said Susan Carroll, President, Inova Loudoun Hospital. “This is a milestone moment, not just for Inova Loudoun Hospital, but for every person who calls Loudoun County home.”

Carroll noted the significance of the designation, saying it reduces the need to transfer patients to other facilities and allows families to stay close to their loved ones during critical moments. “This designation isn’t about a label,” she said. “It’s about lives saved.”

Dr. Edward Puccio, Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine, emphasized how the designation changes real-time patient outcomes. “When minutes matter, those minutes can be the difference between life and death,” he said. “Now, we have the right people, the right tools, and the right protocols in place right here in Loudoun.”

Generous philanthropic support has helped shape and advance this project. “Our family has experienced firsthand how vital it is to have world class trauma care close to home. When lives hang in the balance, every minute—and every mile—matters.  Philanthropy plays a crucial role in healthcare. It allows us to dream bigger, move faster, and serve better.  Our family is proud to have supported this effort—and even prouder to see what it’s become,” commented lead donors Sharon D. Virts and Scott F. Miller.

“We were shocked to learn Loudoun had no trauma center,” said Miller. “That fact moved us to action. Now, families in our community no longer have to travel far for urgent care.”

Sharon Virts added, “When minutes matter, everything matters—especially when it’s someone you love. This new designation tells our community you can trust us to take care of our own.”

The event also featured remarks from Chair Phyllis Randall of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, who has consistently advocated for expanded healthcare access in the county.

The Level II designation reflects Inova’s continued investment in lifesaving care and regional emergency preparedness. Together, Inova’s Level I and Level II Trauma Centers work seamlessly to ensure patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time, when every second counts.
