Explosives detection canine Thor retires from the Fire Marshal’s Office
The Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System’s Explosives Detection Canine Thor has officially retired after serving Loudoun County for over seven years, from August 2017 to December 2024, alongside his handler Captain Chris Barry. Thor will be honored for his service with an official resolution of appreciation from the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors.
During his years of service, Thor has provided explosive protection sweeps for The United States President, Presidential Candidates, members of Congress, state and local officials, and countless residents and guests of Loudoun County and surrounding jurisdictions. Thor has assisted in criminal investigations related to explosive and firearm related crimes for multiple agencies including the ATF, West Virginia State Police, and multiple local jurisdictions.

Thor has reached the end of his career as an EDC and will be greatly missed by the LC-CFRS and Loudoun community. He will enjoy retirement continuing to live with his handler, Captain Chris Barry and his family. “Canine Thor has been an incredible asset to our fire and rescue System, and we thank him for loyally serving and protecting the Loudoun community,” said Fire Chief Keith Johnson.
