Town of Purcellville has issued a Boil Water Advisory

Town staff has issued a Boil Water Advisory for all residents and businesses following a water main break in the community’s drinking water system.

Authorities are urging everyone to boil their drinking water until further notice to prevent possible illness. Failure to follow the advisory could result in stomach or intestinal illness, officials warned.

Residents and businesses are advised to use boiled or bottled water for all drinking, beverage and food preparation, and ice-making purposes. Boiling kills bacteria and other harmful organisms that may be present in the water.

To ensure safety, bring all tap water to a rolling boil for one minute, allow it to cool, and then use it for consumption. Boiling is the preferred method for purifying tap water.

For those unable to boil water due to lack of gas or electricity, an alternative disinfection method can be used. Add 8 drops (about ¼ teaspoon) of unscented liquid household bleach per gallon of water, stir well, and let it stand for at least 30 minutes before using. The bleach should be recently purchased, contain no additives or scents, and have a hypochlorite concentration of at least 5.25%. Water purification tablets may also be used according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Town staff stated that residents will be notified when the advisory is lifted using the same communication channels through which this notice was issued.

For updates, residents are encouraged to follow the Town’s official website and social media pages.
