Timeline for Broadband expansion project in rural Loudoun extended

During the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Oct. 21, meeting, All Points Broadband, the county’s grant partner to extend broadband service to underserved and unserved areas of Loudoun, provided an update about an extension of the project timeline from Oct. 31, to June 30, 2026.

APB has continued making progress building out its infrastructure and has provided the first broadband connections to addresses in western Loudoun. However, completing the project will require additional time.

Earlier this year, APB reported that Dominion Energy Virginia had completed its work on “middle mile” connections, which place broadband fiber on DEV’s utility poles. In some parts of the county, Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative is providing access to utility poles. That work continues.

The project was launched as part of the statewide Virginia Telecommunication Initiative program that awarded Loudoun a grant totaling more than $17 million. Other funding sources for the project include $12.4 million from the county’s American Rescue Plan Act allotment and more than $30 million contributed by APB and DEV.

The project in total will build fiber infrastructure to serve 8,629 Loudoun addresses that are not currently served by a wired provider and were identified in the scope of the project by the Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development. Potential customers will be notified about 60 to 90 days prior to service being available for their address.

Eligible residents are not obligated to sign up for service, but those that do will have to pay APB a connection fee to access the service, plus monthly service fees. As a reminder, the Loudoun County Government is not responsible for providing broadband services, does not collect broadband service fees and has no authority to determine or revise fees set by service providers.

Registration Remains Open
Residents may determine whether their address is included in the project area on the APB website. Interested residents may receive additional updates from APB by subscribing to updates from APB on its website. Registration does not commit residents to purchase broadband service.

More information about the project is posted online at loudoun.gov/BroadbandExpansion.
