Superheroes, smiles, and Halloween spirit soar at Inova Loudoun Hospital

Halloween morning brought a sky-high surprise to pediatric patients at Inova Loudoun Hospital as real-life superheroes rappelled down the side of the building to spread a little magic and cheer.

Members of Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue traded their turnout gear for capes and costumes, becoming Captain America, Mario, Luigi, Stitch, Mr. Incredible, Spider-Man, and even Buzz Lightyear—all descending from the rooftop to wave at children watching eagerly from their windows. They even played tic tac toe!

Lieutenant Jason Ilewite, dressed as Luigi, said the crew was thrilled to take part. “We’re here to bring a smile to kids who might not be able to go trick-or-treating this year,” he explained. It’s a great feeling for us to brighten their day—and it also gives our technical rescue team valuable high-angle training. It’s good all the way around, said Ilewite.

Ilewite added that seeing the children’s excitement made the event unforgettable. One nurse told him it was the first time her patient had smiled all day—a moment that, he said, made the effort more than worth it.

Inside the hospital, the fun continued with “reverse trick-or-treating,” where staff members dressed in costumes of their own and delivered toys and treats door-to-door to the inpatient pediatric rooms. Patients were encouraged to wear their costumes too, turning hospital hallways into cheerful scenes of laughter and color.

Certified Child Life Specialist Cindy DeFrancesco said the day was about more than costumes and candy—it was about connection. “Events like this help kids feel a sense of normalcy,” she said. Even though they’re in the hospital, they still get to be part of the fun and feel remembered and included, she said.

This was the first year Inova Loudoun hosted the rappelling superheroes event, but both the hospital and Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue hope it becomes an annual Halloween tradition—and possibly a model for other holidays as well.

By the end of the morning, the building was filled with giggles, waving hands, and a few happy tears from staff and parents watching nearby. For one day, at least, the heroes didn’t just save the day—they made it.
