Preserve support for Loudoun’s Charter Schools

Dear Loudoun County School Board Members:

I am writing as a parent to express my deep appreciation for the role Hillsboro Charter Academy (HCA) and Middleburg Charter Academy (MCA) play in Loudoun County’s education system—and to strongly urge you not to pass a policy that would prevent these existing schools from seeking county funds for capital improvements.

My child has thrived at HCA thanks to the small class sizes, individualized attention, and passionate teachers who make learning exciting. These schools provide an environment where every student is known by name and where families are engaged partners in education. The results are clear: HCA and MCA consistently achieve some of the highest test scores in the county, proving that this model works.

Beyond academics, charter schools like these serve as innovation hubs. They pilot new curricula, teaching strategies, and community engagement models that the county can adopt more broadly. In this way, charters benefit not only their students but the entire Loudoun County Public School system.

Changing the policy now to deny them access to county funding for critical needs such as roofs, HVAC systems, and safety upgrades would shift those costs onto parents—something that was not part of the agreement when these schools were established. Doing so would put the county in breach of its commitment to these schools and jeopardize their ability to continue delivering excellent results.

If you must adopt this policy, I urge you to make it apply only to future charter schools, not to those already in operation. Please honor the agreements made when HCA and MCA were founded and continue to support these schools as vital, thriving parts of Loudoun’s educational ecosystem.

Thank you for your consideration and for your commitment to the children of Loudoun County.
