LCPS Students Attend Amazon Girls’ Tech Day
Loudoun County Public Schools’ middle school students had the opportunity to explore science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) careers during Amazon Girls’ Tech Day on May 2, at The Academies of Loudoun. The event, organized by the LCPS Computer Science Office, aimed to inspire girls to pursue STEAM-related interests.
Amazon, through the Loudoun Education Foundation, sponsored the event, which saw students engaged in interactive workshops on topics such as forensic science, LED light sculpting and AI. In addition, panels featuring women from NASA, Amazon and other leading companies offered insights into STEAM careers.
Nicholas Grzeda, Supervisor, Computer Science shared, “Amazon Girls’ Tech Day provides an incredible platform for our students to engage in hands-on STEAM activities that connect directly to real-world applications. By participating in events like this, students—especially young women—can build technical skills and gain the confidence needed to pursue careers in STEAM fields.”

Women make up only 34% of the STEAM workforce, and men outnumber women in most STEM college majors. Amazon Girls’ Tech Day seeks to address this disparity by boosting girls’ interest in STEAM, increasing creative confidence and expanding their career perspectives. Now in its sixth year in Virginia, Amazon Girls’ Tech Day has reached more than 21,000 young women globally.
“Every student deserves the chance to explore, create, and see themselves in STEM careers. Through our partnership with Loudoun County Public Schools and the Loudoun Education Foundation, we’re helping young women across Loudoun access the hands-on learning and role models that can spark a lifelong passion for STEM,” said Carolyn Jackson, Community Engagement Manager at Amazon.
“Being a good neighbor means investing in the next generation of builders, and we’re honored to do that right here in this community.”

Dr. Michael Grubbs, Director of Career, Technical and Adult Education at LCPS explained, “At LCPS, we are dedicated to promoting a growth mindset and creating an inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive. Amazon Girls’ Tech Day helps instill resilience in our students, encouraging them to embrace challenges and become problem solvers who will shape the complex world of tomorrow.”
The success of Amazon Girls’ Tech Day highlights the collaborative efforts between LCPS, Amazon, and the Loudoun Education Foundation in empowering young women to explore STEAM fields. By providing these students with hands-on learning experiences and opportunities to interact with female leaders in the industry, events like these play a crucial role in narrowing the gender gap in STEAM.
As LCPS continues to prioritize inclusive, real-world learning, Amazon Girls’ Tech Day stands as an inspiring example of how community partnerships can make a lasting impact on students’ futures.
