Emerick Elementary holds Annual Deeper Learning Showcase

Emerick Elementary School held its second annual Deeper Learning Showcase on April 12. The community experienced fourth- and fifth-grade students demonstrating how they are critical thinkers through deeper learning experiences of their choice. The event, themed “Students Being Interested in Their Learning” highlighted what students are learning and how they are engaging in that learning.

Through voice and choice, students identified a deeper learning experience that highlights their critical thinking skills. Students presented on topics such as:

  • Using baseball to better understand mathematics
  • Ancient Egypt
  • American Sign Language
  • The Battle of Yorktown
  • Musical Instruments

Students were encouraged to choose any instructional activity or project they wanted to highlight as long as it was designed and created during the current academic year. Students presented their topics for seven minutes and then answered questions from parents and administrators in attendance. The event was expanded to include third-grade students after last year’s success.

“Deeper learning goes beyond surface-level memorization,” said Emerick Elementary School Principal Dawn Haddock. “It involves critical thinking, complex problem-solving, and engagement with meaningful content. When students delve into topics from multiple angles, they gain a deeper understanding that lasts beyond the classroom.”
