Loudoun County Statement Regarding Airline Crash at National Airport

The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, the county’s first responders, and county staff join our community and regional partners in expressing our deepest condolences to those impacted by the tragic crash involving American Eagle Flight 5342 and an Army Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport Wednesday evening. Our thoughts are with families, coworkers and friends of the victims’ families, military personnel, and the airline community who have experienced tremendous loss.

“On behalf of the Board of Supervisors and residents of Loudoun County, I offer heartfelt condolences and prayers to the families and loved ones of flight 5342,” said Board of Supervisors Chair At-Large Phyllis J. Randall.  “We thank the first responders from Loudoun and across the Washington metro area for the heroic acts during this tragic incident.”

The county is aware that published reports have identified members of the Loudoun community as among the passengers on the plane. The county recognizes that this heartbreaking incident has impacted our friends and neighbors. We offer our sympathy to the Loudoun figure skating community. We join you in your grief as we wait for more information about the victims and the investigation into the cause of the crash.

“I join Chair Randall in expressing my most heartfelt condolences to the families of those lost in this tragedy, some of whom live here in Loudoun,” added Vice Chair and Ashburn District Supervisor Michael R. Turner. “Our entire community stands with them in this painful hour.” 

The Board also expresses its sincere gratitude to all of the region’s first responders involved in the incident. We thank the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System who have supported our regional partners by providing relief staffing. Loudoun County’s public safety agencies and emergency management personnel have been engaged with state and regional entities to offer any mutual aid that is necessary to support the ongoing response near Reagan National Airport.
