Dry Mill Road closes to through traffic beginning April 17

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, April 17, Dry Mill Road (Route 699) will be closed to through traffic for approximately a month between the Route 9 (Charles Town Pike)/Route 7 Business (Colonial Highway) intersection and Woodburn Road (Route 769) for Dry Mill Road over Washington & Old Dominion Trail bridge rehabilitation project work, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Those needing to reach properties along Dry Mill Road will have access; however, they will not be able to go beyond the bridge (located slightly east of the Route 9/Route 7 Business intersection) in either direction.

Through traffic will be detoured via Route 7 Business, Harmony Church Road (Route 704), and Woodburn Road back to Dry Mill Road.

The bridge is scheduled to reopen to traffic by Friday, May 15.

The Washington & Old Dominion Trail will remain open at all times; the existing protective canopy on the trail at the bridge will be extended outward for trail users’ safety. Trail users may encounter temporary stoppages at the bridge; if they do, such stoppages will last no more than 15 minutes.

The weight-restricted (27 tons) masonry stone arch bridge that carries Dry Mill Road over the W&OD Trail dates to the 19th century and was rehabilitated in 2006.

The bridge rehabilitation project includes:

  • Installing a strengthening system for the stone arch to remove current weight restrictions
  • Repairing bridge spandrel walls and stone masonry
  • Upgrading the parapets
  • Installing slope protection and new guardrail and end treatments
  • Washing the bridge
  • Repaving the roadway approaches up to 100 feet on either side of the bridge
