Ketoctin DAR to Dedicate “President’s Hill” at Oatlands on Arbor Day
Four Presidential Descendant Trees to Be Planted in Honor of America 250
The Ketoctin Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will host a special Arbor Day Tree Planting Ceremony at Oatlands Historic House & Gardens to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The ceremony will dedicate a new presidential grove named “President’s Hill.” Four native saplings — each a documented descendant from the historic landscapes of Mount Vernon, Monticello, Montpelier, and Oak Hill — will be planted on the Oatlands grounds.
These trees trace their lineage to the Virginia homes of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. Their planting symbolizes continuity, stewardship, and the enduring legacy of the nation’s founding generation.
Mayor Kelly Burke will attend the ceremony. The Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard will present, and local historian and author Mark Leepson will provide historical remarks.
The event, held under the tent at Oatlands, is open to the public and is expected to draw approximately 60–75 attendees, including DAR members and community guests.
The tree grove is part of Ketoctin Chapter’s participation in America 250, a nationwide commemoration marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. While a permanent bronze plaque marking the grove is currently pending approval, temporary markers will identify each presidential tree at the time of planting.
“Trees are living witnesses to history,” said Lori Fallace, Regent of the Ketoctin Chapter. “As we commemorate America 250, we are honored to plant descendants from presidential gardens that will continue growing for generations to come.”
The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 24, at Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg.
