Loudoun to hold public information meeting on Franklin Park Expansion

Loudoun County is hosting a public information meeting Oct. 23, to update the community on plans to add 130 acres to Franklin Park in western Loudoun and the ongoing legislative process to rezone part of the acreage to allow recreational uses.

The public information meeting will be held Thursday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m., at Round Hill Elementary School, 17115 Evening Star Drive, in Round Hill. Attendees should use door B-3 on the side of the building to enter.

Representatives of the Loudoun County departments of Parks, Recreation and Community Services and Transportation and Capital Infrastructure and the Town of Round Hill will present information about the project, which proposes the rezoning of 102 acres of property owned by Loudoun County and the 28-acre Sleeter Lake Park property owned by the Town of Round Hill. The county’s plan calls for passive park amenities linking Sleeter Lake Park to the existing Franklin Park.

Anyone who requires an accommodation for any type of disability or needs language assistance to participate in the meeting may call 571-627-7108 or send an email. Three business days’ notice is requested.

The plans for the park require that the Board of Supervisors approve the rezoning of approximately 120 acres of land for park and recreational use as well as a special exception to allow the park in the zoning district. On Sept. 23, the Planning Commission recommended that the Board of Supervisors approve the rezoning and special exception and forwarded the “Franklin Park West” legislative application to the Board’s public hearing scheduled for Nov. 12, at 6 p.m., at the Loudoun County Government Center, 1 Harrison St. SE, in Leesburg. (“Franklin Park West” is the name being used only for the purpose of the legislative application process: the additional acreage will be under the name of Franklin Park.)

The Planning Commission also approved a “Commission Permit,” which will allow the use of the property for public park recreational facilities.

Anyone interested in providing comments to the Board of Supervisors about the proposed plans for expanding Franklin Park is encouraged to sign up to speak at the Board’s Nov. 12, public hearing.

Speakers may provide input in person or remotely. More information is online at loudoun.gov/SignUpToSpeak.
