Leesburg to celebrate Lafayette’s historic visit

In August, the Town of Leesburg will commemorate the 200th anniversary of General Marquis de Lafayette’s historic visit on Aug. 9, 1825—an event that celebrated the young nation’s founding ideals and enduring alliance with France. Lafayette was warmly welcomed as “The Nation’s Guest” during his farewell tour of the United States.
A hero of the American Revolution, Lafayette played a key role in securing America’s independence, fighting alongside George Washington and later helping to rally French support for the war effort.
As the country approaches its 250th anniversary, Leesburg’s Lafayette bicentennial celebration offers a unique opportunity to reflect on this legacy. Throughout August, the Town will host events and exhibits that educate, inspire, and honor the values Lafayette championed.
“Leesburg is honored to be part of this historic milestone,” said Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk. “Lafayette’s visit reminds us of the powerful bonds formed during our fight for independence and the lasting impact of those who stood for liberty.”
To help residents and visitors engage with the celebration, a dedicated page has been added to the Town’s website. It includes details about Lafayette’s 1825 visit to Leesburg, a brief history of his contributions to the American Revolution, information on America’s upcoming 250th anniversary, and a full listing of related events taking place throughout August. Join Mayor Burk and Town Council members during Lafayette’s return on Aug. 9 during TASTE Leesburg.
