Background

The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors provided for an Art Programs Initiative in January 2023. This initiative is operating within the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services. Temporary staffing positions have been tasked with increasing the visibility of the Loudoun County Art Collection, as well as managing the development of the Comprehensive Arts Plan for the county.

The Comprehensive Arts Plan provides a vision for the arts in Loudoun County, with a clear set of goals and strategies regarding the development of public support for the arts that recognize and highlight the county’s unique attributes. This plan provides strategies for both short and long-term arts and cultural programming in the visual and performing arts.

Since September 2024, Designing Local, the county’s consulting firm on the project, conducted a wide-reaching series of interviews with Loudoun residents engaged in the arts, arts organizations, government officials and economic development staff through one-on-one meetings, focus groups, and a tour of the county. They have also conducted a public survey that garnered over 1,100 responses and organized public input workshops throughout the county to gather and refine the community’s expressed needs and opportunities in the arts.

More information about the county’s arts programs can be found at loudoun.gov/arts.

  1. Letter to the Editor – 28 April 2025 (posted here since the letter was not published in the regular edition)

This week, the draft Loudoun County Comprehensive Arts Plan was released to the public, amplifying the voices a strong contingent of Loudoun citizens who value visual, performing and literary arts as core components of what makes this the place we want to live, work, and play. Who are we?

    • The painter who more closely observes and appreciates the intricacies of filtered sunlight and the surrounding natural world

    • The film writer whose plotline reveals and instills the benefit of appreciating perspectives and experiences different from your own

    • The craftsperson who fashions a coffee mug and feels the accomplishment of creating something functional from a lump of clay

    • The patient who feels healing while listening to music because it stimulates synaptic connections, thereby focusing and calming brain activity

    • The drama student, whose role teaches empathy while providing the connection of a team effort where everyone is applauded and included

The Board of Supervisors’ investment in the Comprehensive Arts Plan envisions a scenario where The Arts bring us together, help us to appreciate our beautiful surroundings, build self-esteem, and soothe us during stressful times. These are the outcomes we want for our community, our children, our parents, ourselves. We urge the Plan’s prompt approval and implementation.
