Two LCPS Middle Schools awarded grants from VMSA

J.L Simpson and Sterling Middle Schools were awarded grants from the Virginia Middle School Association. The grants look to support projects that promote deeper learning that is engaging and purposeful and that align with the Virginia Standards of Learning.

J.L. Simpson Middle School has been awarded a grant from the Virginia Middle School Association for its project, “Integrating Cooking in History.” This innovative initiative will engage students in history through hands-on cooking experiences.

Led by history teachers Jennifer Herrin and Christina White, the project aims to create a more engaging and immersive learning environment. Students will prepare meals from various cultures and eras, gaining a deeper understanding of historical contexts through firsthand exploration of food and flavors. The grant from the VMSA will support the purchase of necessary cooking equipment and ingredients for the program.

“The ‘Integrating Cooking in History’ initiative truly embodies the spirit of creative and impactful education,” said VMSA President Dr. Elizabeth Sanders. “This project has the potential to transform the way students learn history, fostering a deeper connection to the subject matter while developing valuable life skills.”

In addition to exploring diverse cultures and historical periods, the project will also emphasize a focus on the historical contributions of women and people of color. By examining the impact specific individuals and groups have had on food and its history, students will gain a more nuanced understanding of the past.

“We are excited to incorporate our cooking initiative into our history classes,” Herrin said. “This multisensory experience can engage students, and its immersive manner encourages empathy which can build stronger community connections. Engaging, immersive, and thought-provoking, these activities can provide a richer, fuller, and ‘tastier’ understanding of the past, breaking the boundaries of traditional learning methods.”

Sterling Middle School has been awarded a grant for its project, “Tag, You’re It!” This initiative will utilize podcasting tools to enhance the English language learning experience for middle school students. The project is led by Mabel E. Lamprea, an English Language Learner teacher for grades 6-8. “Tag, You’re It!” aims to foster a safe and engaging environment for students to develop their speaking and writing skills through podcast creation.

Podcasting offers a unique blend of writing, storytelling, and public speaking. The project will encourage self-assessment and collaboration as students hone their communication skills within the familiar classroom environment.

“The ‘Tag, You’re It!’ initiative exemplifies the power of technology in education,” said VMSA President Dr. Elizabeth Sanders. “By incorporating podcasting, Ms. Lamprea’s project creates a dynamic learning experience that fosters confidence and communication skills in a fun and interactive way.”

Beyond individual projects, the grant will enable Sterling Middle School to expand the scope of its podcasting program. Students will ultimately use the equipment to showcase the diverse stories of their peers, teachers, and other stakeholders within the school community, promoting inclusivity and cultural understanding.
