Purcellville Police Sergeant Eric Bridge retiring
Purcellville Police Sergeant Eric Bridge is retiring on April 3, after eight years of service to the Purcellville Police Department and over 37 years in law enforcement.
Sergeant Bridge graduated from York College of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice in 1987. He was hired by the Fairfax County Police Department after graduation, where he remained until his retirement in June 2016. Sergeant Bridge joined the Purcellville Police Department in August 2016.
Since 2016, Sergeant Bridge has served the people of Purcellville, dutifully fulfilling the role of patrol officer until his promotion to Sergeant in 2018. During his time with Purcellville, Sergeant Bridge shared his wealth of knowledge and experience gained during his career at Fairfax, with those he mentored and supervised.
One of Sergeant Bridge’s most impactful roles was that of Field Training Officer, which he began in 2018. Sergeant Bridge was involved in training every officer hired by Purcellville since he started serving as an FTO. In 2020, Sergeant Bridge became the Field Training Coordinator, managing the field training program for all newly hired officers. As the FTO Coordinator, Sergeant Bridge oversaw the additional three-month field training program for all officers before being released for solo patrol.
While at Purcellville, Sergeant Bridge was also well known for his exceptional detective and case management skills. At larger agencies, a patrol officer responds to a call for service, takes a report, and if there is an incident which needs further extensive investigation, it is traditionally turned over to a detective. However, with no official detective positions at the Purcellville Police Department, officers often take on their own investigative work to solve crimes. Sergeant Bridge was one who gladly took on such a case, and worked every investigative angle until the case was solved, or all leads were exhausted.
Additionally, Sergeant Bridge’s strong relationships he built within the community through outreach efforts allowed him to establish good rapport with those who readily provided tips and information to assist with his investigations. In addition to not only solving crimes, Sergeant Bridge worked proactively to prevent criminal activities. He continually collaborated with property managers, Home Owners Associations and community groups to discuss and solve community issues before they became larger problems.
Sergeant Bridge also enjoyed attending community outreach events, and was a frequent attendee at the Department’s Homework Club, and local sporting events; always engaging with local youths he encountered. He enjoyed mentoring troubled teens, working closely to help them find a path to success. Even during his off time, Sergeant Bridge volunteered to coach youth sports for over twenty years, to include baseball, football, inline hockey, and ice hockey.
Sergeant Bridge was also appreciated for his leadership skills, which were acknowledged both internally and externally of the Purcellville Police Department. He was recognized by his fellow officers in 2018, as he was selected as the Purcellville Police Officer of the Year; a peer voted award. Most recently, he received a Meritorious Action Award in 2024 from the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office for his keen criminal investigative skills on a recent case involving the recovery of a stolen firearm, which had fallen into the hands of a local juvenile who made credible threats to use the weapon.
The experience and expertise provided by Sergeant Bridge’s previous time at the Fairfax County Police Department proved invaluable to the Purcellville Police Department and town. While at Fairfax, his career included the roles of Detective under the Criminal Investigation Bureau, Applicant Investigator/Recruiter under the Administrative Support Bureau, and a Training Supervisor at the Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy. Sergeant Bridge also served as a Negotiator on the Crisis Negotiations Team under the Special Operations Division, as well as the Fleet and Quartermaster Supervisor, and Patrol Supervisor at several district stations.
With a career in law enforcement spanning almost four decades, the impact of Sergeant Bridge’s retirement is significant. However, his dedication to mentoring those around him and sharing his experiences with his fellow officers will allow his positive influence to be felt beyond his time in Purcellville.
A retirement ceremony will take place on Friday, March 15, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Purcellville Town Hall at 221 South Nursery Avenue to recognize his accomplishments. All are welcome to attend.
