Purcellville Public Safety Day—May 17

Join us for Purcellville Public Safety Day on Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is a free community event to interact with our local first responders and increase bicycle safety awareness. Activities will be held at the Purcellville Public Safety Center located at 500 North Maple Avenue. The Purcellville Public Safety Day is jointly hosted by the Purcellville Police Department, the Purcellville Parks and Recreation Division, Purcellville Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, the Purcellville Volunteer Fire Company, and the Purcellville Volunteer Rescue Squad.

All activities are free to attend, though registration is required to participate in the Pedal Purcellville family fun bike ride and/or decorating contest. The activities that are part of the event are described below.

Public Safety Day
Public Safety Day celebrates both National Police Week and Emergency Medical Services Week with a fun day of exploration and learning.

  • Activities include:
    • Meet and greet with state, county, and local first responders
    • Displays of police, fire, and rescue apparatus
    • Demonstrations
    • Paint the police cruiser
    • Face painting
    • Scavenger hunt
  • There will be treats for children and lunch will be available for purchase (e.g. hamburgers, hot dogs, etc.).
  • The following local organizations are participating along with the Purcellville agency hosts: American Red Cross, BetterALife, Bike Loudoun, LAWS Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Services, Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue, Loudoun County Fire Marshall’s Office, Loudoun County Animal Services, Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, Loudoun Free Clinic, Tree of Life Ministries, Washington & Old Dominion Regional Park, NOVA Parks, Saving NOVA Littles, and Virginia State Police.

Bike Safety Rodeo
The Bike Safety Rodeo helps children learn and practice bicycle safety skills.

  • Activities include:
    • Helmet fittings (free helmets will be given to those who do not have one)
    • Basic bicycle safety checks conducted by Trek Bicycle Leesburg
    • An on-bicycle safety obstacle course.
  • Upon completion of each safety station, each child will receive a “Bicycle License.”

Pedal Purcellville
Pedal Purcellville is a family fun bike ride and bicycle decorating contest. Details are below.

  • Schedule:
    • 10 a.m. – Check-in
    • 10:30 a.m. – Bike decorating contest with prizes awarded for the top three winners
    • 11 a.m. – Bike ride through the Town of Purcellville (an alternate route will be used in case of inclement weather)
  • The route for the family fun bike ride through town is below:
    • Start at Purcellville Safety Center back parking lot
    • Left on North Maple Avenue
    • Right at Shoppes on Main
    • Right onto 23rd Street
    • Right onto the W&OD Trail
    • Then back to the Purcellville Safety Center parking lot.

Parking for the Purcellville Public Safety Day will be in the open field across from the Purcellville Public Safety Center. Participants may also park at Loudoun Valley High School (340 North Maple Avenue) and walk or ride their bikes to the Safety Center utilizing the paved pathway.
