Leesburg Council to Partner with VFW

The Leesburg Town Council has voted to partner with the Loudoun County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1177 on a Hometown Hero banner program.

VFW Post #1177 will oversee the program, which has recently been rolled out by several Virginia localities, mirroring similar initiatives in other states. The banner program will recognize Leesburg and Loudoun County residents who have served, or are serving, in the United States Armed Services.

Each banner will display the name and likeness of a current or former member of the military who is currently serving, honorably discharged, retired, or deceased. Additional criteria on eligibility for the banners may be determined by the VFW. Banners to honor a loved one may be purchased from VFW Post #1177 for $175.

The Town will install up to 56 banners around Freedom Park between July 4 and Veterans Day this summer. In future years, they will be installed in time for Memorial Day and remain up through Veterans Day. Freedom Park is home to the Town’s Freedom Memorial that is dedicated to those who lost their lives during 9/11 and commemorates other historic dates in our Country’s fight for freedom.

For more information on the program, email the VFW at info@vfw1177.org. The Leesburg program is expected to be added to the Military Tribute Banners website, militarytributebanners.org/banner-programs.html, in the coming days.
