Inova in critical need of platelet donors
Inova Blood Donor Services is experiencing a critical shortage of platelet donations and urgently needs donors to help replenish the supply for patients across the region.
Inova is currently managing less than a one-day supply of platelet units to support patient care needs across the health system. Unlike red blood cells, platelets expire in just five days and cannot be stockpiled for future use.
Platelets are essential for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, trauma patients, transplant recipients, and individuals undergoing major surgeries. A platelet shortage can delay or cancel life-saving procedures.
National demand for platelets continues to outpace supply, contributing to shortages across the country. Inova is encouraging eligible donors to schedule appointments as soon as possible. A single platelet donation can help save up to three lives, and the donor’s body replenishes platelets quickly. Eligible donors can donate platelets every 14 days at Inova.
Appointments are strongly encouraged. To schedule a donation or find a donor center, visit InovaBlood.org or call 1-866-BLOODSAVES.
