Bach’s Masterpieces Come to Life on the Harp at Wheatland Concert Series
One of the world’s greatest musical masterpieces will be heard in an extraordinary new way when the Wheatland Concert Series welcomes acclaimed harpist Dr. Alyson Kanne on Saturday, Aug. 22, at 6 p.m. for an intimate evening devoted to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.
While Bach composed his celebrated works for keyboard instruments, they take on an entirely new character when performed on the harp. Rich, luminous, and remarkably expressive, the instrument reveals colors and textures that transform familiar masterpieces into a fresh musical experience.
The evening will feature selections from Bach’s monumental Goldberg Variations, along with movements from the French Suite and other beloved works.
Legend tells us that in 1741 Count Hermann Karl von Keyserling commissioned Bach to compose music that would bring him comfort during long, sleepless nights of illness, rewarding the composer with a goblet filled with gold.
The resulting Goldberg Variations have become one of the towering achievements of classical music. Bach biographer Johann Nikolaus Forkel later wrote that even such a magnificent gift “was not enough to pay for their artistic value.”
Following the concert’s first half, guests will enjoy an elegant French wine dinner prepared by Magnolias, creating an evening that celebrates both music and fine cuisine.
The menu includes warm Salade Chèvre Chaud with local greens, walnuts and lardon; a classic Bouillabaisse featuring monkfish, shrimp, salmon and mussels in a Pernod broth with garlic croustade; and a traditional French Plum Torte served with homemade cinnamon ice cream, coffee and a selection of teas. Each course is paired with French wines selected to complement the menu.
Presented in an intimate setting with limited seating, the evening offers guests a rare opportunity to experience Bach’s timeless music in an unforgettable way—through the elegant voice of the harp, accompanied by exceptional food and wine.
