Update: Infant victim in Hancock Place assault dies
The Leesburg Police Department is providing an update regarding the assault of an infant that occurred on Sept. 17, in the 0 block of Hancock Place NE.
The victim, an 8-month-old girl, has since died as a result of the injuries sustained during the assault.
The suspect, Alvaro Mejia Ayala, now 22, of Leesburg, was arrested on Sept. 17 and charged with strangulation. He remains held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. In consultation with the Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, additional charges, including murder, are forthcoming and pending further investigation and forensic evidence.
Leesburg Police Chief Thea Pirnat stated, “This heartbreaking case has profoundly impacted our community and our department. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the victim’s family as they face this unimaginable loss. I want to acknowledge the first responders and medical professionals who did everything possible to save this child’s life. I also thank the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in locating and apprehending the suspect, and the Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for their ongoing legal guidance and support.”
