Remembering John Moffett Tharp

John Moffett Tharp, 76, of Hillsboro, Virginia, died Sunday, June 1, 2025 at Heritage Hall, Leesburg, Virginia. He was born May 30, 1949 in Sterling, Virginia, the son of the late William Davis Tharp and Mary Cole Tharp.

He worked as a master electrician for Local IBEW 1026 and Universal Wiring, LLC. He also worked at NIH and the Pentagon during his career. John served in the U.S. Army. As a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, he was a respected Vietnam Veteran.

He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Purcellville. He married Karen C. Sgarrella-Tharp and is survived by his wife, Karen; son, Paul Joseph Tharp (Kim) of Pensacola, FL; two stepsons, William Gary Sgarrella, Jr. (Crystal) and Joseph Edward Sgarrella (Kate); four grandchildren, Joseph Edward Sgarrella, Jr. (Erika), Sophia Marie Sgarrella (Eli Zielke), Mara Elizabeth Gaugler and Stephanie Bennett; two great grandchildren; his sister, Carlyn Sue Grey; two brothers, James Davis Tharp of Charles Town, WV and Harvey Lynn Tharp (Joann) of Leesburg, VA and many other special relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William Thomas Tharp; and a sister, Bunnie Tharp Diehr. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 487, Purcellville, VA 20134.
