Leesburg Zoning Ordinance rewrite ready to view Feb. 14 &15

Representatives from Kendig Keast Collaborative, the consultants leading the comprehensive rewrite of the Leesburg Zoning Ordinance, will host two open house-style public meetings to present their proposed changes to the first half of the Zoning Ordinance. Members of the public are invited to attend and provide feedback on Feb. 14 and 15.

The meeting dates, times, and locations are:

Wednesday, Feb. 14
6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Ida Lee Park Recreation Center

Thursday, Feb. 15
10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Leesburg Town Hall

People are welcome to drop in at any time during the meetings. Topics covered in the first half of the new ordinance include:

• General Provisions
• Zoning Districts
• Dimensional Standards
• Use Regulations
• Development Standards

“A major goal of the Zoning Ordinance rewrite is to make the document more user-friendly. We’re moving the information that a home or business owner would most frequently need, like what uses are allowed on a specific property or how far back from the property line an addition needs to be, to the front of the ordinance,” explains James David, Leesburg’s Director of Community Development. “The procedural information for rezoning, special exception, and other legislative actions is further back. In addition, the new ordinance will include more illustrations to clarify the regulations.”

At the meetings on Feb. 14 and 15, the consultants will provide a brief presentation summarizing the content of the draft ordinance and highlighting the changes from the current ordinance. Excerpts of the new text and sample illustrations will be on display. Attendees will have the opportunity to talk with the consultants and to provide comments and feedback.

On the evening of Thursday, Feb. 15, the consultants will make a presentation to the Planning Commission at their regular meeting in Town Hall, at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend this meeting or to watch the meeting live online at www.leesburgva.gov/webcasts.

The Zoning Ordinance rewrite project began in July 2023 and is expected to be completed with the adoption of the new Zoning Ordinance by the Town Council in the summer of 2025.
